The Indian government has introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, proposing a ban on online money games with heavy penalties for violations. Here’s what you need to know:

Penalties for Violations:

  • Offering or Facilitating Online Money Games: Up to 3 years imprisonment and/or ₹1 crore fine.
  • Advertising Money Games: Up to 2 years imprisonment and/or ₹50 lakh fine.
  • Financial Transactions: Up to 3 years imprisonment and/or 1 crore fine.
  • Promotion of E-Sports and Social Games: The bill encourages e-sports and online social games while prohibiting harmful online money gaming services.

Organizations in the online skill gaming sector wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, demanding a review of the central government’s bill banning all types of online games played for money, including skill-based ones. Due to the ban on all types of online gaming, more than 2 lakh people in the country will lose their jobs, more than 400 organizations will close their doors. There are more than 50 crore gamers in the country. The industry has expressed concern that it pays 20000 crores in taxes to the government annually

Why is money gaming banned?

  • Money gaming has recently emerged as a major addiction among children and youth, leading to growing concern
  • Every year, an estimated 45 crore people in the country lose Rs. 20,000 crore through gaming
  • Such apps have emerged as a major network for illegal money laundering. There is a fear that they pose a security risk to the country
  • In this context, a strict law to ban money gaming games and control online games
  • According to this law, online game management, platform creation, and advertising are punishable offenses
  • The law completely prohibits the transfer of money through such gaming apps by any financial institution
